Let’s be safe in the alleys

As the road construction progresses at a steady pace, more drivers are utilizing the extinsive alley system in Prairie du Chien to dodge closed streets and intersections.  Be on the look out for children on bikes, pedestrians and pets that also use the alleys.  We live very close to the downtown area and have a heavily used alley behind our house.  The children in our neighborhood use the alley as much as the cars and service vehicles that pass through here.  Please be mindful of your speed in an alley, it is not the same as the road you were just traveling.  If the kids in our neighborhood can be on the look out for you, the least you can do is be on the look out for them.  And, hey, let’s be careful out there.

Construction Update - May 12th

Sanitary sewer and water main installation, including service lateral replacement, has been completed on Prairie Street.  During the week of May 12th, storm sewer will be replaced north of Wisconsin, and concrete pavement will be replaced on the Wisconsin/Prairie intersection.  Prairie will then be ready for street replacement.

Water main has been installed on Blackhawk Avenue from Main to Prairie, and will be tested the week of May 12th.  The sanitary sewer will also be completed, and service lateral installation may begin later in the week.

Water main installation will be underway on Beaumont Road from Frederick to McLeod beginning May 12th.  Curb and gutter will be removed on Monday, and water main installation will begin at Frederick on Tuesday, proceeding south.  At 9:00 on Tuesday morning, water will be shut off to those on Frederick from Beaumont to Michigan, to facilitate a connection.

The high river level is still preventing any more sewer work on Main Street.  Blackhawk Avenue will be closed between Main and Prairie, but the Main/Blackhawk intersection is open, allowing access to the island.

Sanitary Sewer and Watermain Construction Update May 2nd

Sanitary sewer and water main installation has been completed on Prairie Street. After the water main is in place, it must be disinfected with chlorine, and pressure tested to ensure there are no leaks. The chlorine is then flushed out, and a water sample is taken and tested to see that it is free from bacteria. Only after the new main is successfully tested can service laterals be re-connected. This is why the street must be dug up several times during the process. Sanitary sewer is installed first, because it is the deepest. Then water main is installed. Finally, service laterals are installed after the entire segment of water main has been installed and passed testing.

During the week of May 5th, new water and sewer service laterals will be installed on Prairie Street. Water service to individual houses will be interrupted for approximately 1 – 2 hours while the reconnections are made.

Concrete removal on Blackhawk Avenue from Main to Prairie will also begin Monday, followed by water main installation. Sidewalk will remain in place for now. The asphalt has also been milled off between Prairie and Beaumont, but no further work will occur until later in May.

The asphalt milling on Beaumont from Frederick to McLeod will be completed but no utility work is likely to begin until the following week.

The high river level is still preventing any more sewer work on Main Street. Blackhawk Avenue will be closed between Main and Prairie, but the Main/Blackhawk intersection is open, allowing access to the island.
